Stephen Colbert Fights Back Tears In Moving Memorial Tribute To Longtime Executive Assistant

Stephen Colbert, the beloved host of CBS’ The Late Show, delivered a heartfelt tribute on Monday’s episode to his longtime executive assistant, Amy Cole, who tragically passed away the day before in New York City after a brief illness.

Colleagues and friends took to social media to share their condolences and memories of Cole, who had been battling cancer and receiving treatment at Manhattan’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. As the show concluded, Colbert, visibly emotional, bid his farewell with a somber tone. Struggling to maintain composure, he tapped his desk and offered a simple “good night” before leaving the set.

Following Colbert’s exit, a memorial title card appeared on screen, dedicated to Cole, with the years of her life, 1970-2024, displayed prominently. The tribute served as a testament to her impact and the profound loss felt by all who knew her.

Cole, a native of Houston, Texas, made her mark in the television industry after relocating to New York City in 2002. Over the years, she worked as a production assistant and executive assistant on various shows, including Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn, The Colbert Report, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Her dedication and warmth endeared her to colleagues, and her contributions were deeply valued by the entire Late Show team.

In a heartfelt obituary, it was noted that Cole’s 16-year tenure working with Colbert transcended mere employment—it was a source of purpose and fulfillment for her. She was described as an exceptional teammate, cherished by her work family, and her absence will be keenly felt.

Survived by her parents, two sisters, and extended family, Cole’s impact extended far beyond her professional life. Described as having a vast circle of friends, her loss reverberates deeply within her community.

Colbert’s colleague, Late Show director and producer Jake Plunkett, expressed the collective sentiment, lamenting, “Words cannot measure how big a loss Amy Cole is to this world. F*ck cancer.”

In honor of Cole’s memory, contributions can be made to St. Agnes Academy, Radio Lollipop, or Donorschoose.org in lieu of flowers.
