Named for its map-like wings or the Greek Titan Atlas, the Atlas moth is one of the largest moths in the world. Females release strong pheromones to attract males, who track them with feathery antennae.
After feeding as caterpillars on citrus and cherry trees, they cocoon and emerge as adults—males without mouths, living just long enough to mate.
Their wing tips resemble snake heads, a clever defense that mirrors real cobras, which flare their hoods and hiss when threatened.
