But one veteran analyst thinks his obvious bet on a stock market crash is a losing bet.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Chaikin, Founder and CEO of Chaikin Analytics, \u201cHe would be as wrong as Mike Wilson was,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?t=1s&amp;v=1xP2QtlVPRk\" data-ylk=\"slk:told Benzinga;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Benzinga said<\/a> this week.  He was referring to the chief US equity analyst at Morgan Stanley, who was surprised by the historic rally in stocks this year and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/stock-market-outlook-ai-chatgpt-cooling-inflation-earnings-morgan-stanley-2023-7?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:issued a mea culpa;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">issued a mea culpa<\/a> In late July.<\/p>\n<p>Chaiken rejected the notion that Burry&#8217;s portfolio update spooked retail traders into selling shares this week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I promise no one on Reddit follows Michael Burry,&#8221; he said.  &#8220;They are in their own world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the main driver of the stock meme craze in early 2021 was Berry <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/big-short-investor-michael-burry-scion-gamestop-stock-price-frenzy-2021-2-1030050393?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:invested in GameStop;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">I invested in GameStop<\/a> In 2019, he wrote several letters to the heads of retail video game stores that highlighted excessive short interest in exchange for their stock.  There is, too <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Burryology\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Burryology;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">poultry science<\/a> subreddit with 17,000 members dedicated to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/big-short-michael-burry-burryology-subreddit-cryptic-tweets-secret-stocks-2021-10?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:studying Burry;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Pre study<\/a> And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/big-short-michael-burry-scion-burryology-reddit-q4-stock-portfolio-2022-2?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:tracking his trades;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">track his trades<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He also shrugs off the Chicken Berry as just another market doomer, noting that his only notable achievement was anticipating and profiting from the 2008 housing crash. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/michael-burry-big-short-housing-bubble-crash-gamestop-meme-stock-2021-10?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:contrarian bet;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">cross bet<\/a> Chronicled in the book &#8220;The Big Short,&#8221; actor Christian Bale portrayed Burry in the film adaptation, making Burry a household name.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s always Michael Bury, whether he&#8217;s a bondsman, or whether he&#8217;s a sometime Stan Druckenmiller, or Paul Tudor Jones,&#8221; Chaykin said.  &#8220;By the way, they are much smarter than Michael Berry with a great track record.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><button class=\"link caas-button collapse-button\" data-ylk=\"elm:readmore;slk:Story continues\">Story continues<\/button><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a one-trick pony as far as I&#8217;m concerned,&#8221; added the stock analyst expert.<\/p>\n<p>However, Burry has made several minute calls in recent years.  For example, it is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/big-short-michael-burry-predicted-inflation-spike-investor-warned-tweets-2021-5-1030430103?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com#:~:text=Michael%20Burry%20said%20as%20early,sharpest%20increase%20in%2011%20years.\" data-ylk=\"slk:warned;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">warned<\/a> Inflation may become an issue as early as April 2020.<\/p>\n<p>When price growth reached a 40-year high last summer, he said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/big-short-michael-burry-inflation-stock-market-crash-recession-fed-2023-7?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:correctly predicted;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">I predicted correctly<\/a> That would sink in within months.  he is too <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/news\/stocks\/big-short-michael-burry-market-predictions-stocks-bubbles-twitter-profile-2022-6?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=markets&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:rang the alarm;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Sound the alarm<\/a> on meme stocks and cryptocurrencies before they plunged last year.<\/p>\n<p>Investor Scion Asset Management held bearish put options on 200,000 shares of both <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/etfs\/spdr-sp-500-etf-trust-us78462f1030?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=markets&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">SPDR S&#038;P 500 ETF Trust<\/a> And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/markets.businessinsider.com\/etfs\/invesco-qqq-trust-us46090e1038?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=markets&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" data-ylk=\"slk:Invesco QQQ Trust;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link \">Invesco QQQ Trust<\/a> Index funds that track the S&#038;P 500 and the Nasdaq-100, respectively, on June 30.  The combined face value of the property was $1.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Burry&#8217;s options can only be hedges, and they&#8217;ll cost him a fraction of that amount.
