Paris Jackson, the only daughter of the late pop music icon Michael Jackson, recently shared that despite being mixed race, she identifies as a black woman.<\/p>\n

Saying her father would insist she\u2019s black, \u201cbe proud of your roots,\u201d Paris honors her father\u2019s roots and legacy \u2013 both musically and physically \u2013 remarking, \u201cI consider myself black.\u201d<\/p>\n

Born April 3, 1998, Paris Jackson, an American actress, model, and singer, is the daughter of Michael Jackson and Debbie Rowe.<\/p>\n

Paris, 25, and her two brothers Bigi, 22, and Prince, 27, were born into the spotlight, with scores of fans wanting to know everything about the newest members of the Jackson family.<\/p>\n

When they were young, the Billie Jean singer tried to protect his children from prying eyes with blankets (for Bigi), masks, and veils.<\/p>\n

In 2007, Jackson\u2019s bodyguard told People the three kids were \u201cwell-mannered, well-behaved kids\u2026They are really level-headed\u2026They were Michael\u2019s first priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it left Paris experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She shared: \u201cI experience audio hallucinations, sometimes, with camera clicks and severe paranoia and have been going to therapy for a lot of things, but that included.\u201d<\/p>\n

The young woman also admitted she attempted suicide \u201cmultiple times\u201d by age 15, and in 2019, she entered a treatment facility.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cIt was just self-hatred\u2026Low self-esteem, thinking that I couldn\u2019t do anything right, not thinking I was worthy of living anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nToday, she leans heavily on the influence of her big brother Prince Michael Jackson, whom she shares, \u201cHe\u2019s everything to me, you know?\u201d In 2020, she told People of her relationship with Prince, \u201cI\u2019ve always looked up to him and always wanted his approval and everything, and wanted to be more like him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet Prince says his little sister is more like their father. \u201cBasically, as a person, she is who my dad is. The only thing that\u2019s different would be her age and her gender.\u201d<\/p>\n

He adds that his little sister is similar to her father \u201cin all of her strengths, and almost all of her weaknesses as well. She\u2019s very passionate.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to being hyper passionate about her career \u2013 she\u2019s walked the runway for major fashion brands like Chanel and is also the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band The Soundflowers \u2013 she\u2019s also committed to honoring her father\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone in my family does music. I mean, I\u2019m a Jackson,\u201d she said in 2020. \u201cIt makes sense that I\u2019m a musician but like, a Jackson doing folk indie?\u201d<\/p>\n

All about the race
\nShe also connects with her late father on race.<\/p>\n

While the Beat It singer had fair skin later in his life, the hitmaker \u2013 reported to have Vitiligo, a condition that changes the pigmentation of his skin \u2013 was African-American who had a darker complexion in his earlier years.<\/p>\n

Jackson faced a lot of speculation over his changing appearance over the course of his career and always denied bleaching his skin.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 1993, the Thriller star insisted his nose job was the only cosmetic procedure he had and that the depigmentation of his skin was due to his Vitiligo.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am proud of my race. I am proud of who I am,\u201d Jackson told Winfrey at the time.<\/p>\n

With her dad\u2019s African-American heritage in mind, Paris says she identifies as black.<\/p>\n

Discussing the situation with Rolling Stone magazine in 2017, Paris said that she \u201cconsiders [herself] black,\u201d and that \u201c[Michael] would look me in the eyes and he\u2019d point his finger at me and he\u2019d be like, \u2018You\u2019re black. Be proud of your roots.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing her lighter skin and noting that many people \u2013 because of her dyed blonde hair and striking blue eyes \u2013 assume she\u2019s from \u201cFinland or something,\u201d she adds, \u201cAnd I\u2019d be like, \u2018okay, he\u2019s my dad, why would he lie to me?\u2019 So I just believe what he told me. [Because], to my knowledge, he\u2019s never lied to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, when her declaration of race was published, she received some criticism. Talk show host Wendy Williams was very vocal, mocking Jackson\u2019s only daughter for identifying as a black woman: \u201cI get that she considers herself black and everything, but I\u2019m just talking about the visual because you know\u2026black is not what you call yourself, it\u2019s what the cops see you when they got steel to your neck on the turnpike.\u201d<\/p>\n

She adds: \u201cIt\u2019s what they see. But that\u2019s cute and good for her.\u201d<\/p>\n
