An astronaut has revealed that he made a \u2018sobering realization\u2019 after seeing Earth from outer space.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ron Garan, a former NASA astronaut, spent 178 days in space and traveled over 71 million miles in 2,842 orbits in his career.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Now as he reflects on his experiences, he\u2019s shared that humanity is \u2018living a lie.\u2019<\/p>\n

Garan\u2019s epiphany is far more compelling than any flat Earth theory.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Big Think,\u00a0he discussed the moment it occurred to him that society had gotten everything wrong.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

You see, Garan experienced the so-called \u2018overview effect,\u2019 which occurs in many astronauts when they view Earth from space.<\/p>\n

BBC\u2019s Sky at Night magazine says it can result in astronauts experiencing \u2018spiritual awakenings\u2019 or deepen their connection to our planet, with Apollo 14\u2019s Edgar Mitchell describing it as an \u2018explosion of awareness,\u2019 per Neotic.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

For those privileged enough to see Earth from such a unique vantage point, it can trigger some unexpected and overwhelming emotions.<\/p>\n

The astronaut said when he looked out of the window, he came to a \u2018sobering\u2019 conclusion.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw the paparazzi-like flashes of lightning storms, I saw dancing curtains of auroras that seemed so close it was as if we could reach out and touch them,\u201d Garan recounted to Big Think. \u201cAnd I saw the unbelievable thinness of our planet\u2019s atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIn that moment, I was hit with the sobering realization that that paper-thin layer keeps every living thing on our planet alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garan said he didn\u2019t see the economy, instead, he saw \u2018an iridescent biosphere teeming with life,\u2019 continuing: \u201cBut since our human-made systems treat everything, including the very life-support systems of our planet, as the wholly owned subsidiary of the global economy, it\u2019s obvious from the vantage point of space that we\u2019re living a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garan also opened up about the \u2018profound experience\u2019 in an interview with Forbes, describing how it \u2018just blew him away.\u2019<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cThe other thing I felt, and I can\u2019t really explain it, is that being completely detached from Earth also made me feel deeply connected with everyone on the planet. It was this overwhelming kinship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garan\u2019s observations underscore an important message: we need to shift our priorities.<\/p>\n

Since returning to Earth, the former astronaut has become a vocal advocate for environmental stewardship and the importance of prioritizing planetary health over economic gains.<\/p>\n

He founded the Manna Energy Foundation, a nonprofit that centers on ensuring clean drinking water access in developing nations, and the project Fragile Oasis, which strives for positive global change.<\/p>\n
