Tensions were already high as the final match between Team Canada and Team USA unfolded, fueled by Trump’s tariff threats and his offhand remarks about annexing Canada. Canadian fans had previously expressed their discontent by booing the American anthem in Montreal, and American fans retaliated by booing O Canada in Boston.

But it was Kreviazuk’s deliberate change to the anthem’s lyrics that took center stage.
