12 Workers Who Looked Innocent, but Hid a Dark Truth

At first glance, some people appear entirely ordinary—just another coworker, manager, or employee going about their business. However, even the most naïve people can hide devastating truths. From employees who stole from their own company to individuals who committed significant crimes, these stories illustrate the terrible truths hidden behind deceptively innocent faces.

Story 1

This cashier at work was defrauding customers when they purchased gift cards. She would keep the ones customers purchased and then replace them with blank ones.

A lady caught her doing it and confronted her right there in the store. She began yelling for someone to call the cops. The manager nearly had a breakdown. The cops arrived and arrested her at her register.

This occurred on Christmas Eve, so it was quite dramatic. © Unknown author / Reddit

She was my manager at a fast-food restaurant. She was a middle-aged woman with two teenage sons—very lovely and the first manager we’d had who was actually organized. She had apparently stopped making cash drops for some time and had taken $30,000. Police apprehended her in the thick of the lunch rush. © grislyaddams / Reddit

Story 4

I work at a fast-food restaurant. A man once came through the drive-through and requested a decaf, but he asked us to double-check that it was decaf because he had terrible allergic responses to caffeine and could literally d.i.e from it. He explained everything, and we said we understood and would double-check that it was decaf.

I made the decaf and placed it on the handout counter by the window. My coworker, who was preparing coffee for the following order, also placed it on the handout counter. My manager took a coffee and was going to offer it around when a coworker interrupted, “Wait, that’s not decaf!” My manager asked, “So?” and handed it out nonetheless.

Five minutes later, the man was admitted to the hospital. Thankfully, my manager was sacked. © Positive_melon_40 / Reddit

I departed a former employer after discovering that he had misrepresented the company’s performance and what I would be doing. There is “spinning,” and then there is flat-out lying.

Fast-forward Four years later, after that company failed, he was “launching a startup” and contacted many members of the development team to enlist their help in creating his e-commerce website. He stiffed them all, and none of them ever got paid. © Mm_Donut / Reddit

A former employer was successfully sued by the authorities when his secretary filed a whistleblower complaint regarding his billing methods. The secretary received nearly $400K from the government as her reward. This was around 20 years ago when $400K was worth much more. © Tricky-garden / Reddit

Story 10

I work for a class one railroad. A signal maintainer was submitting bogus tests and failing to respond to trouble calls while still being paid for them. There were a total of 38 infractions, with penalties of up to $105K per day.

Story 11

I almost d.i.e.d while giving birth to my kid. My kid and I were in the hospital for ten days, and I was completely alone. A lovely nurse would pay me a visit at night and update me on my baby’s condition. I’d never forget her smile. Two years later, I saw her on the 10 o’clock news.

I learned that the woman was not a nurse. It turned out she was caught attempting to abduct a newborn from the hospital—a baby born to a single mother who, like me, had no one with her.
As the investigation progressed, it became clear that she was working for a hazardous organization.

Fortunately, she and the entire group were apprehended before they could harm anyone else.
